Simi

Simi, also spelled Symi, has a number of lovely anchorages all around the island, including:

Simi Town

Yialios (Simi Harbour) on Simi, Greece The main town (called Simi) is a port of entry, so this is a good place to cross over to or from Turkey. There are a number of ferries that run from Rhodes and Datca, so, at certain times of day, the town can seem overrun with day-trippers but it is a beautiful place despite all that.

Boat building and sponge fishing once made Simi even more prosperous than Rhodes. However, two World Wars and the arrival of synthetic sponges put paid to that and the town is only now starting to recover from years of neglect. Don't be put off by that; it is well worth the visit.

Yialios (Simi Harbour) on Simi, Greece There are many good bars and restaurants here in the lower part of town but a walk up the hill into the Chiorio (the upper part of the town), away from the more tourist frequented establishments, is well rewarded.

If the night life is too loud - and it can be noisy, although not usually as bad as Datca or Marmaris - we can anchor in Pedi Bay just to the East of the town and walk in, or Nimborios Bay to the North West and go in by RIB.

Panormitis (Monastery Bay)

The monastery at Panormitis, Simi, Greece. On the South side of the island, this sheltered bay is dominated by the Monastery of the Archangel Michael, founded circa 450 AD, but completely rebuilt in 1783. Although almost landlocked, there can be a swell into the bay, so it is worth taking a line ashore.

Connected to the monastery, there are two museums whose opening hours tend to coincide with the arrival of tour boats, and it is worth stocking up with fresh bread from the bakery. There is also a taverna here making this a useful overnight stop.

Sesklia Island

Although uninhabited and only reachable by boat, the taxi boats see to it that Sesklion, just South of Simi, is not entirely deserted. There a good beach with shade, making this a lovely place to spend the day swimming or just chilling out, before mooring for the night at Panormitis or Simi town.

Possible same day destinations from Simi are:
